Bibimbap,Where Are YOU From!?

2011102868  태성아  Sung-A Tae

The mixture of rice, vegetable, egg, kimchi, ham or everything with sesame oil or spices. This is the hero for this post, Bibimbap.

Bibimbap is one representation of traditional Korean foods. It did not begin in one specific place in Korea, but all over the country. In this case, even though Bibimbap was first mentioned in the book written in the end of 1800, it has quite a lot of kinds of history. Here today I would talk about four of them.

1.       The Theory of Food in the Royal Court

In this theory, it is said that Bibimbap was one of the food for the King of Korea. There were four kinds of rice meal in the Royal Court —— white Sura (the King’s meal), red-bean Sura, five grains Sura and Bibim. Among these four, Bibim was the lightest meal had at noon or when the cousin of the King came into the Royal Court.

2.       The Theory of Food in the Busiest Farming Season

In the farming season, especially in the busiest one, it was really hard for the farmers or their wives to ready for an entire meal and the bowls for holding all kinds of foods. Then they began to put several kinds of vegetables, meat, rice and everything together in one bowl and mixed them. This is one theory for the beginning of Bibimbap.

3.       The Theory of Partaking of Sacrificial Food and Drink

In Korea, most of the families hold ancestral rites. Not only in the family, but in some temples the people hold similar ones, sacrificial rites. People will eat up all foods after these sacrificial rites, which is thought as gods and men eating together. However it is hard for people who live far from the place to take enough bowls or plates. Because of that, they received several kinds of food in one bowl and mixed them. Bibimbap had born then.

After talking about the beginning of Bibimbap, here comes its transformation.

The pilaff is one other kind of food from the Near East. Furthermore, Bibimbap could become similar to that. What we have to do only is to put some other kinds of food, such as sausages, cheese, fried eggs or spaghetti sauce if you like, on the Bibimbap made.

It is really simple for everyone to make Bibimbap, with remained materials in the fridge!

Just meat??? No!! This is Bulgogi !

Hello~~! I’m coming with Bulgogi!!!! Bulgogi is a very delicious food!! Personally I love meat. So I love this food very much. Now I introduce to you about Bulgogi history and Bulgogi fusion food.
The history of Bulgogi started at 17 century. In 17 century, there was a record. It says “Spread the beef evenly and pound them with back of the knife to soften them. Skewer the beef and season them in sesame oil with salt. When it is marinaded enough, cook them under heat. When the meat is cooking dip in the water and cook them again. Repeating this process makes the meat taste better and softer.” This is the first Bulgogi’s image. Like this, Bulgogi has very long history. The name “Bulgogi” is used first in about 1950.

Now I look into existing Bulgogi fusion foods. First, Bulgogi burger. As you know, this is already famous food. Every fast food restaurant sell this food. Taste also very delicious. Because Bulgogi is one of the meats, maybe people love this without hesitation.

Second food that is introduced by me is also already famous food. That is Bulgogi pizza. This food is also sold in every pizza restaurant. I think Bulgogi and pizza are well-matched. Pizza is made with various topping such as paprika, cheese, potatoes, ham etc. So in these various topping, spread Bulgogi pieces. Then that is all.

I love these two fusion food. I think Bulgogi is better known than Kimchi. Because Bulgogi suits people’s taste more than Kimchi. So maybe Bulgogi is easier to broaden across the world. I anticipate more fusion food that is famous in the world. Of course, now there are many Bulgogi fusion foods. But these need more become known. On the other hand, I think original bulgogi is competitive good. Because Bulgogi is not spicy. If Bulgogi is sold in the other nation, ih should sell well.

The Combination of Tteokbokki & Pizza!!!

2011102868  태성아  Sung-A Tae

Everyone in Korea knows Tteokbokki, also called as Fried Rice Cake, which is sold everywhere by the road, and the pizza which became really well-known by the Korean. However, how many people know its history?

First, let’s talk about Tteokbokki. In fact, Tteokbokki was one menu of the meal for the kong in Korea. Well, it was not in the form we see now in the past, though. At that time, Tteokbokki was a really simple kind of food. People put only soy sauce on rice cake, and this was the first form of Ttekbokki.

In 1953, there exists an old woman who was selling Tteokbokki in a open space outside of KuangHee Door. This normal person was the first one who began to sell Tteokbokki in the form at present.

Let’s talk about the next one, pizza. This is not the one from Korea, but it is really well-known through Korean. The same as Tteokbokki, pizza also has its hometown, Italy. In Italy, there is a city named Pisa, with a tower called the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It is said that this place born pizza.

At the first it was only formed as bread with some vegetables such as onions. Since 18th century, some tomatoes were added and the bread became pizza, and the word was first made at that time. Then some other materials were added, like cheese, some kinds of oil and so on.
From 19th century, meat, garlic and various kinds of cheese were used to make a pizza. Finally, it began to attract people and gradually became the one we know.

Here comes a question: Why were Tteokbokki and pizza, one from Korea in Asia and one from Italy in Europe, put together?

That is because there were combined together and a new menu is born nowadays. It is named Pizza-Tteokbokki. In this way, two totally different culture are connected by there own food. Tteokbokki, one of the traditional food in Korea, is gradually going into the world and is becoming globalized.

There exist a lot of other kinds of food similar to Pizza Tteokbokki. A few of them would be introduced next time.
